CNO Development Program

The CNO Development Program is a great opportunity for nurses to expand their career as a Chief Nursing Officer. The CNO Development Program will select and offer training and work experience in both the corporate and hospital setting for "Associate Chief Nursing Officers" who are the brightest aspiring Charge Nurses, Nurse Managers, Nurse Supervisors, and/or Nurse Directors.

The Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) will be assigned to a CNO mentor who will help guide their development into a superior healthcare leader. The ACNO development is also supported by targeted work assignments and seminars offered at the corporate office. The goal of the CNO Development Program is to equip nurses with executive leadership skills the role of CNO within a HCA facility. Program outline and Topics includes:

  • Development of Key Behavioral Competencies
    • Interpersonal Skills
    • Leadership Skills
    • Business Management
    • Executive Disposition
  • Onboarding for candidate and mentor
  • Clinical Resource and Quality Educational Seminar
  • Physician Relations development and planning
  • Strategic Operations Seminar: a facility perspective
  • Strategic Operations Seminar: a market perspective
  • Leadership Development and Networking Seminar

Program Requirements:

  • Currently hold an active registered nurse license in the United States or Territories
  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing or higher, with an understanding that enrollment (not completion) into a Masters of a Health Science or Business program is required before program completion
  • Minimum of 5 years leadership and management experience in nursing and hospital operations. Most recent 3 of the last 5 years of leadership must have been in a direct leadership role in a hospital setting or direct patient care environment
  • Geographic Flexibility-must be willing to relocate to fulfill commitment of a CNO role

Program Duration:

  • Average commitment to program depends on background, leadership experience and program success.

Application Process:

  • The application process is a four phased approach with behavioral based interviews:
    • Phase One: Apply online, including an attached resume and cover letter
    • Phase Two: Submit two professional references (CEO & CNO) who will be required to complete a leadership assessment tool on applicant
    • Phase Three: Telephone Interview screening
    • Phase Four: Panel Interviews live in Nashville at HCA Headquarters
  • Applicants will be notified of their status throughout the process.

The application process for the CNO Development Program will open this year but dates has yet to be determined. A link will be provided at the bottom of this site once the application cycle is open and accepting applications and resumes.

Here are a few brief points of advice to consider when applying:

  1. Get as much leadership experience as possible, in as many hospital/healthcare areas as you can.
  2. Fine tune interviewing skills over the phone, and in person.
  3. Research and review information relating to executive competency and development.
  4. Review you resume for accuracy.
